January 26, 2024

Every year on 27 January the UK marks the horrific organised slaughter perpetrated in Europe in the 1930s and 40s and in many other parts of the world since then.

At a time when dehumanising hatred and violence directed against those labelled as ‘other’ seem more intense and devastating than ever Scottish PEN remembers the past and adds its voice to the calls for peace in the present, in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and in all areas where desperation, fear and the hunger for power are promoting hatred and the appalling destruction of innocent lives.

As part of the remembrance that we undertake on Holocaust Memorial Day, Scottish PEN acknowledges the importance of writing on the horrors the day marks. We commend, not least, Never Tell Anyone You’re Jewish by Maria Chamberlain and Jane Haining: A Life of Love and Courage by Mary Miller.
