In this study we hear from over 100 writers, editors, publishers and activists, who detail their experiences of defamation threats and the law, their fears around censorship in public discourse, and their feelings about free expression in Scotland today.

Yesterday evening (2.3.21), the Scottish Parliament unanimously passed the Defamation and Malicious Publications (Scotland) Bill and heard the final round of proposed amendments.

A new survey from Scottish PEN and the University of Strathclyde is seeking to establish the impact that Scottish defamation law has on writers, publishers and social media users.

The Justice Committee has today published the Stage 1 report on the Defamation and Malicious Publications (Scotland) Bill. Scottish PEN welcomes the report but highlights the need to progress a one-year limit on bringing defamation action.

The ability of journalists and members of the public to ask questions, offer criticism and share their opinions on matters of public interest is essential to free expression. This decision only strengthens this position.
